MS in Epidemiology and Biostatistics

Admissions Requirement

Applicants must hold a baccalaureate degree or a foreign equivalent and have a cumulative GPA of at least 3.00. All applicants to the MS program must have taken the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) General Test, MCAT, or have a doctoral degree. Test results should not be more than 5 years old. The ETS institutional code for The Graduate School at Northwestern is 1565.

If your native language is not English, you must certify your proficiency in the English language in one of the following ways:

  • Provide official scores for either the TOEFL or IELTS exam. The test must be taken no more than two years before the intended quarter of entry. For the TOEFL, you must score 600 or higher on the paper-based test, 250 or higher on the computer-based test, or 200 or higher on the internet based test. For the IELTS, you must receive a score of 7.0 or higher.
  • Provide official transcripts verifying an undergraduate degree from an accredited four-year institution or equivalent, where the language of instruction is English.
  • Provide official transcripts verifying a graduate degree from an accredited institution where the language of instruction is English.

Investigator Track

  • Supplementary Material: none specified beyond the requirements outlined in the Admission section of The Graduate School Bulletin located online at http://www.tgs.northwestern.edu/.
  • Undergraduate/Graduate Degree: baccalaureate or equivalent
  • Coursework Background: biology and/or pathophysiology
  • Relevant Research or Experience: strongly recommended but not required
  • Other: official GRE scores, MCAT, or have a doctoral degree

Statistical Analyst Track

  • Supplementary Material: none specified beyond the requirements outlined in the Admission section of The Graduate School Bulletin located online at http://www.tgs.northwestern.edu/.
  • Undergraduate/Graduate Degree: baccalaureate or equivalent
  • Coursework Background: mathematics
  • Relevant Research or Experience: desirable
  • Other: official GRE score, MCAT, or have a doctoral degree

Applicants must apply to the MSEB program directly through The Graduate School. You may access the online application through The Graduate School home page at http://www.tgs.northwestern.edu/admission/ and click on "apply online." The application may also be accessed directly at https://app.applyyourself.com/?id=nwu-grad.

In addition to the application and the application fee (which can be paid online by credit card), applicants must provide original transcripts of post-secondary school coursework; letters of recommendation from at least two employers and/or faculty members; and a one-page statement of purpose describing why you wish to pursue graduate studies in epidemiology and biostatistics, your areas of interest, and why our MSEB program is a good fit for your graduate studies.

Application Deadline

The application deadline is January 15 for international applicants and April 1 for domestic applicants. Admissions are made on a rolling basis and we strongly recommend that applicants submit their materials well before the deadline.
